Chick Webb
In a class as generally famous and compelling as jazz, even the absolute most all around regarded performers could escape everyone's notice as far as being a standard legend. This isn't a disclosure of an announcement all alone, as this was the story for some a performer. The reason could be essentially be a loss of eclipsing during the jazz/swing rage, not being horrendously imaginative, or not having a series of hits. A portion of these causes even distressed the subject of this paper. Be that as it may, it was another factor that makes his story so intriguing, yet tragic. Not each craftsman could be carved in legend, for example, figures like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, or have his music played all over like Benny Goodman. Yet, Chick Webbââ¬â¢s sway on both the music, culture and procedure with respect to the drums were and still are very much regarded in the jazz scene, in spite of a portion of the components that would keep him away from being an extraordinary star. Th e narrative of Chick Webb needs in any case the factor that kept him down the most and is additionally the first to harass him. Regardless of his contested birth date, Chick was conceived in Baltimore, Maryland to William H. also, Marie Johnson Webb.William Henry Webb, his original name, was brought into the world with spinal tuberculosis, a condition that would contrarily influence him his entire life and eventually cost him his life. So how can one deal with this torment, not to mention become the best jazz drummer ever? First of all, playing the drums originated from his primary care physician. The plan was that the fast development of the appendages that is required by the drums would ââ¬Å"loosen upâ⬠his solid appendages and reduce the agony. With the intrigue of the instrumentsââ¬â¢ recreational and therapeutic obvious, a youthful Webb would turn into a paper kid with the sole objective of setting aside up enough cash to purchase a drum set.Until at that point, Webb would make due with the base of upset trash jars to spark his interest. By 11 years of age, Webb would have his drum set and by 17 years of age, he had moved to New York City to seek after his fantasy about being a player in the jazz capital of the world. Chick Webb started playing in New York night clubs when he showed up in 1924. Clubs, for example, the Paddock Club and the Black Bottom took him in, reference by as a matter of fact Duke Ellington, who in a flash perceived his ability. Ellington would turn into a significant figure in Webbââ¬â¢s life, both as a guide and an adversary, further down the line.Noting his predominant expertise and solid character, Ellington would urge Webb to shape and lead his own little band. Webb would do only that by framing the Harlem Stoppers, a quintet that would proceed to gracefully the interest for swing music in the period known as the Harlem Renaissance. His abilities were uncommon, and thought about perfect to fuel the cheery pace of swi ng music and give a drive to the music that could once in a while be coordinated. Normally, this expertise turned out to be immediately perceived everywhere throughout the city, prompting the extension of the Harlem Stoppers, who might now be known as the Chick Webb Orchestra.Webbââ¬â¢s status as an effective performer was established when his band was chosen as the house band of the Savoy Ballroom, an incredible setting situated in Harlem. He would be the essence of the setting until his last years. Based exclusively off their own benefits, the Chick Webb Orchestra was an exceptionally respected band. In any case, what made the band amazing in its own privilege was their ability to acknowledge challengers in what was known as ââ¬Å"cuttinââ¬â¢ sessionsâ⬠, or clashes of the groups. Some great, however normal jazz groups endeavored to challenge the incomparable Chick Webb Orchestra, just to be smothered of the ballroom. However, when then-ââ¬Å"King of Swingâ⬠Benny Goodman and his band showed up to challenge Webbââ¬â¢s, Chick started to at long last get some praise from outside of New York. In New York, more than 9,000 individuals came to see this verifiable occasion, 5,000 of them remaining outside just to get the opportunity of conceivably hearing the great conflict that was to occur. Also, whenever the open door emerged for Webb and his band to say something, they did as such in power. Performing first, Goodmanââ¬â¢s ensemble performed respectably the same number of anticipated from a unit of their stature. But when Webbââ¬â¢s team started, the result would get self-evident. With the thunder of the group Webbââ¬â¢s ensemble, they would wind up blowing Benny Goodmanââ¬â¢s band out of the dance hall similarly as he did the various groups before him that tested him. His driving sounds frequently over-controlled different groups, playing into the hard swing of his ensemble. Quality Krupa, an unbelievable drummer in his own privile ge and drummer for Goodmanââ¬â¢s band noticed that ââ¬Å"Webb cut me to strips! â⬠It was this second where Webb was delegated ââ¬Å"King of Swingâ⬠and without a doubt ââ¬Å"King of the Savoyâ⬠.Other amazing challengers, for example, Count Basie (who played Webb to a draw in any event), Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington would test the determination of the Chick Webb Orchestra, however none would decrease his status as one of the transcendent bandleaders and performers of the time. Like most well known muscians of the time, Webb started to record his work, starting in 1927. In any case, his amazing sound was hard to record neatly without muffling the full creation of the work. This constrained im to mitigate his sound and let the remainder of the music even out, perhaps diminishing his acclaim. Nonetheless, around and around inside the music business, Webbââ¬â¢s ability and impact didn't go unnoticed. When Decca Records shaped in 1934, Webb marked to the name and put his most on the map accounts, practically all of which including Ella Fitzgerald as the vocalist. Webb at first debilitated the consideration of Fitzgerald as she didn't fit the picture of the commonplace lead vocalist for a swing band. In any case, when he heard her voice, she would turn into the lead vocalist for Chick Webbââ¬â¢s Orchestra. This expansion soar the vocations of both craftsman, changing Fitzgerald into a bonafide genius following the accomplishment of their top hit together, Fitzgeralds version of ââ¬Å"A-tisket, A-Tasketâ⬠. As the quintessential swing craftsman, Webbââ¬â¢s sound combined consummately with Fitzgerald, to such an extent that she got known as the ââ¬Å"First Lady of Swingâ⬠. Sadly, one could state the huge prevalence of Fitzgerald would regularly eclipse Webb, particularly obvious on chronicles. What aggravated it for Chick Webb, was the planning of his recently discovered ubiquity. In 1938, not very long after the moment accomplishment of ââ¬Å"A-tisket, A-tasketâ⬠, Webbââ¬â¢s wellbeing started to fail.Webb had been playing through agony his whole profession, regularly leaving the stage depleted. However, this time, his spinal condition turned out to be increasingly genuine and confined him from playing to a standard that he esteemed fit for his fans. Looking for help, Webb would come back to Baltimore for a significant activity at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Tragically, Webb could never leave the clinic, kicking the bucket at only 34 years of age. Allegedly, his final words were to his mom, saying ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, Iââ¬â¢ve got the chance to go. â⬠The regard the jazz scene had for Chick Webb was evident at his memorial service, where the top performers of the opportunity all came to cover their respects. The overall population additionally came power, to such an extent that the congregation where the administrations were being held couldn't contain them all, and the parade was made out of just about 80 vehicles. As one of only a handful barely any noticeable drummer-drove swing groups, Webbââ¬â¢s sway is quite often downplayed. Be it since his absence of hit records as the frontman, a consequence of Ella Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s prominence or the eraââ¬â¢s failure to appropriately record his ability, or his abbreviated life expectancy, Chick Webb has become a fairly overlooked name to the standard, in spite of his unbelievable status inside the jazz culture. But because of his compelling style, and his fights against a portion of the more marquee names in jazz/swing, Chick Webb will never be overlooked. Popular Culture and Violent Behavior Essay - 11795 Words
Popular Culture and Violent Behavior Introduction In 1871 E.B. Taylor defined culture as that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs, and many other capabilities and habits acquired by...[members] of society.[1] Taylor was talking about high culture, an aristocratic view of the past-times such as ballet, theatre and art. Popular culture, on the other hand, is a form of low culture and is based primarily on marketing, mass production and revenue. Low culture is what is sold to the masses, ergo, low culture equals mass culture. All these terms refer to popular culture, defined in the Oxford Dictionary of Sociology as: à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦accessible toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The question I have posed is a very contentious one, which has been debated by scholars and graduates for some time, with many arguing that popular culture and mass media are ways of brainwashing the masses into the ways of a dominant social order. Others believe that popular culture is a type of folk culture which encompasses the idea of an alternative culture incorporating minority groups, perhaps with subversive values sometimes challenging the dominant control groups, as was scene with the advent of the Indie music scene in the mid nineteen nineties. In this dissertation I aim to uncover whether aforementioned subversive values can be uncovered in popular culture or whether popular culture is really a means by which the masses can direct dominant controlling forces. The main way I will do this is through my research into violent behaviour and the impact that popular culture can have on individuals and groups in society - mainly adolescents and young children - by looking at susceptibility, attraction, reactions and influences. Work ethics guide the managers as well as employees to do the right thing even if doing the wrong thing can equally be rewarding and satisfying. Therefore, workplace ethical issues involve a plethora of ethical dilemmas and ethical abuses that come into play in any job.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Workplace Ethical Issues specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More An ethical issue is defined as an illegal, unethical, or irresponsible act made against the employer, and it jeopardizes the employerââ¬â¢s business. Ethical issues arise when workers including the managers and the subordinates are given the responsibility of making decisions about alternative courses of action. This paper discusses a few ethical issues that arise in the workplace. Harassment of the co-workers or clients is o ne of the major workplace ethical issues that involve violation of the employersââ¬â¢ workplace ethics policy. Harassment in any workplace may involve unsolicited sexual advances, interferences with work performance through intimidation, or non-compliance with the conditions of work. Sometimes illegal harassment can be based on sex, religion, age, disability, race, or color. Johnson (2007) provides that harassment does not only involve violation of business ethics, but also involves a breach of the federal laws. Sexual harassment is the common ethical issue many workers experience at their workplaces and it is propagated by both the management and regular employees. Basically, sexual harassment of any nature makes the workplace hostile and causes distress among the sexually abused employees. According to Bredeson and Goree (2011), the most common ethical issue within sexual harassment is a dual relationship that involves sexual relationships between employees who share profession al responsibilities. Furthermore, sexual harassment occurs when employees engage in unethical intimate relationships, which in turn affects their professional decision-making process. Consensual relationships at workplace between a senior employee and a junior employee can become dangerous. This may happen because a senior employee has more authority to affect the working ability of the junior employee if their intimate relationship breaks.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Therefore, it is advisable to avoid consensual relationships with co-workers to combat ethical dilemmas and workplace distress. Substance abuse is another ethical issue that crops up at many workplaces. It may involve dependence on stimulating substances such as alcohol and other addictive intoxicating drugs. Addiction to any substance becomes a workplace ethical issue when either a manager or a regular employeeââ¬â¢s work performance and productivity are impaired until they use the substance (Johnson, 2007). Alcohol is the most abused substance, and when the employees carry alcohol to workplaces or use in the workplace, it raises serious ethical questions. Generally, substance abuse can be a serious ethical issue if not handled with care since it can create a hostile work environment, and consequently jeopardize the productivity and performance of the entire workforce. In addition, confidentiality is a workplace ethical principle that becomes a familiar ethical issue when it is violated (Johnson, 2007). For instance, the disclosure of an employeeââ¬â¢s personal information or the employerââ¬â¢s business strategy to rival organizations is a major vi olation of the workplace ethics. Actually, protecting the employees from privacy invasion creates trust and perhaps increases their productivity. However, when confidentiality is violated, serious ethical implications may occur, which affect the business negatively. Work ethics require that the clientsââ¬â¢ private information or the co-workers personal information be accessed by authorized individuals only. Conflict of interest is another common workplace ethical issue. It refers to a situation whereby an individualââ¬â¢s interests affect or influence his/her workplace judgment, actions, or decisions. Conflicts of interest are virtually unethical and illegal because they negatively affect workplace performance, decision-making process, and relationships with other participants (Bredeson Goree, 2011). Conflict of interest is a serious ethical issue, which should be avoided or resolved immediately it appears because it may result in professional misconduct in the workplace. De spite workplace ethical issues being endless, organizations can devise moral or ethical policies to protect their employees from ethical violations.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Workplace Ethical Issues specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For instance, an organization can develop a workplace policy based mission, vision and code of conduct, and ensure that each employee understands the code of ethics. In addition, the organization can provide workplace ethics training for employees, create a legal office to deal with employees ethical issues, and research all federal and employment laws relating to whistle blowing to avoid making decisions that lead to negative ethical implications (Bredeson Goree, 2011). Conclusion In summary, ethical issues exist in almost every workplace because workers often face situations, which involve ethical dilemmas. Moreover, when ethical issues are not resolved in time, they result in a hostile work environment making it harder for the employees to give their maximum potential. Thus, it is imperative for employers to respond appropriately to every ethical issue that arises in the workplace to make the workplace safe and friendly. References Barry, V., Shaw, W. (2013).
